Gateway of last resort is not set

172.12.0.0/16 is variably subnetted, 2 subnets, 2 masks
C 172.12.1.0/30 is directly connected, Serial1
C 172.12.1.2/32 is directly connected, Serial1
172.24.0.0/30 is subnetted, 1 subnets
C 172.24.1.0 is directly connected, Ethernet0

Current configuration : 100 bytes
!
interface Serial1
ip address 172.12.1.1 255.255.255.252
encapsulation ppp
clockrate 64000
end

Why does it show two listings for the Serial1 Interface? One for the interface and one for the network? Or? Why not for the Ethernet?

I think it has something to do with the PPP protocol. Not too sure what but from old DIAL-UP days i seem to recall it does something similar.

Hopefully someone else can expand on that.

Smurf, You might be on to something. I removed PPP encapsulation and went back to HDLC:

Gateway of last resort is not set

172.12.0.0/30 is subnetted, 1 subnets
C 172.12.1.0 is directly connected, Serial1
172.24.0.0/30 is subnetted, 1 subnets
C 172.24.1.0 is directly connected, Ethernet0

Now, only the one route is listed. I wonder why PPP needs the additional route.
