I'm not a cisco guru and so stand to be corrected, but I'm pretty sure that a simple serial to ethernet converter will not do what you want as you're not just talking about rerouting simple wire connections. The differing protocols and speeds also need to be taken into account. You will need a device like a
terminal server
.

No, there is no such device other than using a second router.
You could use policy-based routing and NAT to create a router-on-a-stick that will allow you to use a single ethernet port for the inside and the cable/dsl modem.

No, while it uses a rj-45 connector, it is still a serial line. Those are used for connecting to modems or the console/aux ports on other routers.
Serial and Ethernet are different physical entities and the only thing that can convert them from one to another is a router, even if they share a common connector -like an rj-45 connector on the terminal adapter.

If I had 2 2501 routers could i use one of them to connect to a dsl or cable modem with its ethernet port? Could i alsothen route that connection out the serial port of the first router into the serial port of another 2501? Then use the ethernet port on the second router to connect to a switch so i could bring out internet accross my network?
