subnetting is an artifact of insufficient ip addresses. just as nat is. tricks to make ip addreesess serve more boxes. with ip v6 (ever seen one of THOSE addresses-you could NEVER remember it) every atom on this planet could have its own ip.

Actually, just the opposite is true in subnetting. One of the reasons for subnetting is that there are TOO many addresses on a network and you want to cut down the traffic. As a matter of fact, you lose address each time you subnet.
I would agree in the case of Natting, but it is also used for security.

Yep subnetting is more of a performance enhancing measure.. to break down the broadcast domains. As tfs said, you usually waste a few IP addresses when you subnet (though normally you're wasting private addresses so it doesnt matter at all).
Theres some really well written stuff on NAT under the firewalls section of the site. Now that saves IP's bigtime, especially overload NAT. It also makes things a bit more secure.. but security through obscurity never really works (hey I always wanted to say that ! lol).
