I don't think you're being pedantic at all Bishop. The decimal approximation is useful only for estimating purposes. If it is used for any serious work, it should be noted that errors of up to 10% will be encountered at the "terabyte" order of magnitude.

completely agree with both of you,
i have successfully showed the detractors that by using 1000 as conversion factor, we are losing out of a huge amount of data while calculations are being made. the approximations cost a whopping 34% of results, i mean if the result was supposed to be 100 it turned out to be 66, all because they were using 1000 as conversion factor. i have finally won the argument. and guess what, the rest can spend the rest of the month re-calculating everything which was done using 1000 and not 1024!!!
thanks for everything mates
