LAN configuration was created by nkjose
Hi folks
Facing some problem with my LAN. I am trying to isolate a computer from the LAN. The problem is that I would like this computer to remain connected to the internet without being on the local network. Is it possible to do this?
My setup is as follows:
A D-link 502T DSL router connected to a 10Mbps 8 port ethernet hub. There are four computers on the LAN: 3 win98 computers and 1 windows XP computer. I am trying to isolate 1 win 98 computer from the LAN without disconnecting its internet. Wonder if it is possible to do so with this DSL router.
Thanx to all

hi
the 502T, as per my understanding, does not impose access rules amongst LAN clients and hence ur proposal to isolate a single PC on the LAN is not possible. The access/ denial rule implementation ... like in m0st SOHO devices ... only for LAN to WAN and WAN t0 LAN access.
U may hv the reverse happen though .......... by allowing that PC to connect to all other LAN components but disallowing it access online !

If as tHe-SwItCh says, you find out that your router will not do what you want, you could install a software firewall like
Zonealarm
and configure it to prevent all communication with your LAN.

u cannot disconnect it from the LAN if u want it to be connected to internet ... however u can always set the restrictions on ur router where in u can stop the LAN communication with that PC and allowing it still to access the internet functionality.

I m afraid Kunal .... what you say is not a possibility with the specific unit our friend's got .... most SOHO routers do not excercise firewalling/ ACLs for LAN to LAN traffic, but only for LAN to WAN and vice versa.
As Light sez .... a s/w firewall is the solution ..... but rules need to be carefully excercised under the firewall's Administrative Login so that users on the Individual system do not manipulate settings.
