I'd say that a VLAN sub-interface is simply treated as an normal virtual interface

Hi chaps,
what was the reason for implementimg VLAN x sub-interfaces ?
I never could bring up an VLAN if bigger than 1 !
INS-3500XL-24Port#sh ip int brie
Interface IP-Address OK? Method Status Prot
VLAN1 192.168.7.2 YES NVRAM up up
VLAN2 192.168.255.130 YES manual administratively down down
FastEthernet0/1 unass. YES unset up up
FastEthernet0/2 unass. YES unset down down

Hi All,
In my experiance the difference between VLAN interface & VLAN subinterface is purely vendor terminology.
Practically they are the same. The vendor I work for calls VLAN interfaces 'VLAN subinterfaces' because they are part of an overally trunk interface. So in effect we have different levels of interfaces:
Interface = Physical trunk connection (Gigabit Ethernet)
sub interface = Layer 2 i.e VLANs
Hope that adds to the confusion!
