Hi dead-neurons :D ur asking some very gud questions.. im damn shure that yu have all the answers to ur question.. because the depth of ur questions shows that u must have gone through this topic..

id really appreciate if u can give some answers to these questions..

First of all looking at sequence numbers will indicate whether the routers between the two hosts are experiencing congestion, whether its causing retransmission or complete packet loss. How to fix this? Well, it depends on what the problem with the router is. Perhaps its a misconfiguration, perhaps quality of service needs to be implemented, or maybe even the router is not up to the task of routing the network traffic.

Second, if sequence numbers are out of order, this indicates topology changes in the network, or again, a router that is congested.

Third, the window size is an automatically negotiated value between the two hosts. There is not much you can do to change it, except see what other traffic these hosts are doing at the time, and see what you can limit in order to not overwhelm it. Also, it may not even be a host problem at all. If a router is congested, this will affect the window size as well. Check out this link on sliding windows .

Finally, if fragmentation is occuring, this is always occuring at the router. Now, one of your hosts may have jumbo frames enabled, but if the router does not, then it will become fragmented. So, just check the NIC and router configurations to see if there are any non-standard MTU settings. Oh yes, the protocol that would be misconfigured is TCP/IP.

Very interesting thread, are the protocols used across the serial link optomised for a 'high latency' and relatively 'low bandwidth' connection, ie not SMB/CIFS!!

On another note this guy 'Dead-Neur0ns' really should take a chill pill!

Thanks for listening! :?
