packet and frame? was created by truesdq
as packetz are formed at network layer adding ip and frame at data link layer as adding MAC to data ...
when data iz traveling in Lan then it is called frame and if on WAN then data iz called Packet ?
if on WAN data iz called Packet due to ip addressing then v observe dat on WAN there iz also MAC addressez are using when data goez from device to another
is thiz correct ?
so what are the differences between packet and frame?

there are explanation of each layer but not mentioned what i want to know exactly as i asked..
maybe my question is not formulated as it needed to be asked what i want to know

Lets be clear here you asked:
The answer to that question is data traveling on a lan or wan is simply called data.
[code:1]Data is:
Generated by an application - Application layer
Formatted for use - Presentation layer
Managed in data session - Session layer
Fragemented and Ordered into segments with ports - Transport layer
Placed into a packet with source and destination ip addresses - Network layer
Placed into a frame with source and destination mac addresses - Datalink layer
Encoded - Physical Transmission (Physical layer)
[/code:1]
Data being encapsulated by packets and frames may however be refered to as packets on wan connections and frames on lan connections because at those levels that is the protocol data unit that makes the relevant path decision. The data however is still simply data.
So let me mock this up:
I want to send some data in this case the data to be sent is the ascii text "data" and the command line application will be using the message send protocol on both ends. Additionally there will be a switch on each end and 4 router hops along the way.

The difference between a packet and a frame is a packet holds IP addressing information for routers to make interface forwarding choices with and a frame is used by connected interfaces to decide if data should be accepted and switches to decide where data should be sent within a network using mac addresses.
