Sorry for being pedantic, Jack, but the problem is not necessarily the passwords but the unencrypted transmission of the passwords i.e. over plain HTTP, FTP, TELNET, etc.

This raises a serious subject though. Easy passwords can sometimes lead to better security as long as they're not too easy. Enforcing really complex passwords with regular forced changes invariably makes users write them down somewhere, usually on or around their desk or PC which makes security worse not better
