VPN

Hi

I would like to know more information on VPN, that it's history, what types, what protocols are used etc., i heard that layer 3 VPN's Layer 2 VPNS, SSL, IPSec etc.,

Could any body tell me which VPN is good, software one or Hardware. How to choose the right VPN for a particular organisation and who are vendors.
