What about the days of boot-sector viruses? I remember one outbreak that was a real pain to clear up as every user had a collection of floppy disks holding their data and kept visiting other computers...

in theory the virus will not function in safe mode because limited drivers are loaded in safe mode. but in practice things could be really inside out

Senior fellows may know this, one of the nastiest of all is CIH. Also known as Chernobyl or Spacefiller. Stays in your system infecting every thing silently until the trigger date comes, April 26.
This thing can damage the contents of the BIOS flash memory chip. CIH writes garbage to the flash memory chip if the chip is write-enabled. Many PC manufacturers leave the flash memory chip write-enabled. In plain English, the PC will not boot/start even if you replace the hard drive with a new one.
Just like this is not enough, CIH also erases the first megabyte (1024KB) of the hard drive, beginning at sector 0. This deletes the contents of the partition table. This means that the logical drive information is lost.
