PIX Cabling & setup help please!

Hello. can anyone point me in the direction of a site that shows you how to connect a pix to a switch & a router? I'm new to this, so need a hand?

I need the settings for the switch lets say 3750 & also do I need a pix connection per vlan or just per switch?

To connect a pix directly to a router, you will need a crossover cable. To connect a pix to a switch, use a straight cable.

The number of vlans allowed on the pix is dependent on the model and PixOS version you are running. Use the 'show version' command to find out how many vlan interfaces and total interfaces your model supports. If your pix is a 501, don't worry about 'show version'. It only supports 2 interfaces, no vlans.

The 3750 switches will have awareness of up to 4092 vlans (plus 4 non-ethernet vlans), but can only actively use/route 512 or 1024 vlans, if memory serves.

Lets just say I have four vlans, do i need a physical pix connection to the switch for each vlan? On the switch do i make the connections to the switch part of those vlans or do I configure those ports for ip routing?

It depends on the Pix.

If it is a 515E or larger, then you can use a single physical connection. Then set up the pix and the switchport as a vlan trunk. I would suggest using a physical interface for the outside connection of the pix, but that is just personal preference as i find it easier to work with and troubleshoot.

No routing is necessary unless you need multiple vlans behind a single pix vlan interface.
