i'm using fluke software (network inspector + optiview) and monitoring network for 24hour..this is the error from the report

Centillion 100 Virtual interfaces 16777228 to 16777237
encountered multiple messages of ‘Interface utilization exceeded error threshold’ and ‘Interface error rate exceeded error threshold’
throughout the 24 hours monitoring.

question
................

1) what is utilization exceeded error threshold?i've search it on the net but don't really understand what is the error mean]

2) is it true that Industry standard for utilization is 40% and error should not be present.this is advised from my network consultant

need advise from you all..thanks

I'm probably not the best person to anwser this however....

This is how I would interpret these messages.

1)Interface utilization exceeded error threshold

This suggests the interfaces has a utilization threshold level set, and the utilization of this interface has exceeded this level. For example the utilization level may have been set to 55% and the level of traffic at some time has been 55%+. This has triggered the alarm message.

2)Interface error rate exceeded error threshold

This suggests an error threshold (number of errors per time period) has been crossed. For example if the error threshold was set to 3 per 15 minutes, you have at some time recieved 4 errors in a 15 minute period.

It is possible 2) has been trggered by 1). I'd suggest trying to find out what the thresholds have been set to so you can get a clearer picture of what happened.

Hope this helps

1)so the threshold is a switch utilization..is it true?
2)can we set utilization threshold level or it is factory setting?
3)so what is your suggestion to solve this problem?
4)what is Virtual interfaces 16777228?is it the switch circuit?

Hi Apit,

Can you post the make, model & sw version of the switch to help.

I have a little experiance with switches so I am not sure how much more help I can be...

However there are more experianced people on this board than me that might be able to help...

The errors are being raised by Network Inspector/Optiview rather than by the switch. Net Inspector has numerous thresholds set within it that alert you if any of the parameters it is monitoring exceed those thresholds. When you install it, you get all the thresholds set to the default values that Fluke felt might be appropriate for most networks. But they might not be appropriate for yours. What you need to do is decide whether you are experiencing problems on your network or whether things are operating normally. If things are operating as they should then perhaps you need to raise the thresholds for the detection of these events. You do this from the Agent Manager. Stop the agent then go to the Problems tab. Find the event then click the Tresholds button

i'm using centillion 100 from nortelnetworks
the software version is 4.3.0
before this the network connection is ok..
after some cases such as::

-power down
-installation storagestack (brightstore) server
-virus attack (love gates)

then the user suffer with such problem::

-slow login (using novel client)
-when using lotus notes, the "network path not found" error occur and user have to restart pc
-number of user that facing the problem will increase everyday

so they(Customer) want me to have a network health check to find the root cause.

the task that i did due to the problem are:
-using optiview to check the network
-sniff the network
-isolate pc/server that broadcast high on the network
-reset switch that hold services (ATM switch)

after that the network quite ok
after a few day, the problem come again
still suffer with the same problem

question
..............

-is it the switch problem because of high utilization base on optiview result?
-what should i do to solve this problem?
-or should i check the server whether it contribute the problem?
-since i'm not very familiar with server, what should i do 1st?
