Laptop as w2k server

Hi,


I want just to know if it's a good idea to turn my laptop into a server
since i need a windows 2000 serrver as PDC and running DHCP and DNS.
Actually my Laptop config is quiet good :
Dual processors P IV
265 RAM
30GB
GeForce videoi card

my network is small one only 5 users.
the problem is i never see a laptop as server, it's quiet strange for me
to use it as server ! am I right ?
So can laptops be used as Servers: DNS, DHCP,WEB ....

I dont see why one couldnt be, but if a part was to fail in that laptop, bringing the server down, it can be hard to replace. If you had a normal server chassis, you could implement a hotswappable RAID server for redundancy. But then again, you are only serving a tiny network so I don't know if that would ever become a neccessity. IMHO laptops were not made to be servers nor can really operate up to par to one that is designed for the job.

Yes , a laptop can be used as a server,but it is generally not .

That decision is based more on business requirements than technical.

Most networks require dedicated connectivity , so the servers have to be up all the time....i wouldn't want my laptop to run for more than ,say 15 -17 hrs at a stretch.

Also a laptop would start having performance issues after a certain amount of time.

And of course as pointed out by cybersorcerer, in case of damage , parts may not be easy to replace.

However, if your network need not be up all the time, you do not face any performance issues , and your warranty is still there , you may as well go ahead with it.
