Router

Hey all! I'm looking to share internet connection through a router to two pc's. Heres the story: I have two computers one on XP HOME and the other on 98SE. I can connect the XP one fine to the internet after putting in all the settings and stuff. BUT i cannot connect the 98SE for some reason - not even to the router.

ADSL ROUTER: D-Link DSL-502T

The router has a ethernet port and a usb port. I am currently connected via the USB which works. I cant swap them round because the 98SE OS on other computer doesnt accept the drivers for the router for some reason.

I'm really stuck! if someone can help i would appreciate it!

Possible things to check on the Win98SE PC:

1. Different network cable
2. TCP/IP properly installed
3. RUN Winipcfg from Start/Run to and determine if IP address is being allocated.
4. Check that Router DHCP server is enabled. You can test this by plugging XP machine into ethernet port.

Hi phyris, let's try to break this down for you.
First of all, connect the 98 PC to the router using the ethernet cable. Then tell us the following:
1) Do you get any lights that come on at the router and/or the network card in the PC when you plug the cable in
2) With the cable plugged in, open a DOS box on the PC and type ipconfig /all. What do you get?

The method your using to connect your two computers to the Intenet is fairly standard.

However, I'd like to ask you if you'd like to consider purchasing a small switch and connecting all three devices (Router and two PC's) to the switch.

In case your wondering, here's what you'll achieve with the above suggested setup:

1) You won't need to deal any further with your current problem
2) You won't need your XP machine switched on when the Win98 PC want's to connect to the internet
3) You'll have your ADSL router connected to the Internet permanently regardless of which PC is on or off.
4) Having another Pc join the network and access the Internet will be a breeze and won't require any modification of the existing machines/setup.
