Installing a DNS server

A university approached me that the want a DNS server.

How do I configure a DNS server for them
What platform should I use
How do I integrate it to their network

Ask them what they want out of it. It's really easy to set up a DNS server but what are they trying to accomplish by doing so? It may be easier to use dynamic DNS.

Give us a hypothetical example so that we can get a picture, or rather explain to us configuring DNS server for an ISP

I have configured DNS server a lot using windows 2003 in the lab. But in practice, I haven't. And maybe in practice people don't deploy on Microsoft platform
