Switch Interconnection - Best practise was created by skylimit
Hi all, I was just wondering if there's a best practise for interconnecting Cisco switches on a network. For instance, 10 floors in a building are to be networked, would it be good practise to just daisy chain the switches and then terminate it on the router?
Something like so:
switch1<-->switch2<-->switch3<-->switch4<-->switch5<-->switch6,etc<-->Router

Connect uplink of every floor switch into one switch then connect that switch to router so that it would be for maintenance. If you have sufficient ports in switch then you can use etherchannel(channel group) for every uplink.

many thanks for your reply. Is this similar to Cisco Hierarchical Model where you have a core, distribution and access? Any more contributions will be much appreciated. thanks

Normally you would have a setup like this:
2x Core Switch (L3 switch... e.g. 6509, 3750)
Lets say 3750 (type:24 port switches)
Every floor would have a couple of switches..
For this example in total 3 floors, 4 switches a floor. making a 12 switches for connection for the PCs.
The 12 switches would all have a double connection towards the 3750's (prefered optic fibres, else just utp) Making a 24 connections towards the 3750.
The 2x 3750 could be stacked to make up 1 logical switch followed by every uplink being a etherchannel for double throughput.
The 3750 are configured with SVI's for routing, the floor-switches could be 2960's (just L2 switches).
