cisco equipment problems and solutions was created by sose
On site I hardly encounter problems with my cisco devices. I use 2800 series routers, 1900, 2600series. But sometimes some ports just shutdown and i have to bring them up. Now the question is from your experience what are the most commonly encountered problem with these devices.

Picking pebbles on the shore of the networking ocean
Hi Sose,
I use a 2600 router and till now I haven't faced any issues with it (finger's crossed).
Regarding the issue with ports automatically shutting down, are these random ports or specific ports i.e. WIC or ethernet etc, which are doing this weird thing?
If it's random ports, then maybe it's an issue with the router. Try upgrading the IOS and check for any difference. If it's a particular port, then try putting that interface into another slot (if available). You can also try using another interface card altogether to see if the same thing happens. Doing both will eliminate either the card or the router as the main troublemaker.

Picking pebbles on the shore of the networking ocean
Hi Sose,
Try the IOS upgrade path. See if it makes a difference. I understand since there is no pattern of this anomaly, it will take time to determine whether the upgrade fixed the problem or not. But that's a risk you have to take, as there is no pattern of this issue.
I wouldn't say I strongly believe it's the Ethernet ports playing up, but I am inclined to believe that it's something on the router side of things.
Give it a shot, and yes one more thing. Next time it happens, try and document what happened before and after the event. It helps in troubleshooting. You might not be able to capture all the related information, but something is better than nothing.
