Which Switch? was created by jb1972
Hi All,

I have a small non corporate company wanting to set up a server and network using 4 client machines and a printer. I want to use a switch to connect the clients to the server, but unsure as to use a managed switch or an unmanaged switch. What are the advantages and disadvantages of using either?

Thanx

Unmanaged switch - cheapest to buy
Managed switch - more expensive but will give you many configurable features and the ability to measure traffic levels etc
Unless you're absolutely sure this is a fit-and-forget network that will never need to expand and where the user's requirements will nevr change I'd go for a managed switch every time

Hey jb1972 i was listening to some cisco switching podcast on my ipod nano about managed vs unmanaged switches. Man you could Google it "Cisco Switching podcast - managed vs unmanaged switch" u will get some good news that will make u never want to use an unmanaged switch even in a network with less than 4 computers...

I will fall and always fall on managed switches. They Provide more and more....

cheers
