Is it that you must have a modem to communicate via WAN and Internet, how about wirless wan communications or the metroethernet
modems convert analog signals to digital signal , do we still need them these days.

I am not sure whether we can completely replace the modems. What I think that until and unless we have the analog telephone lines, we need the modems (or converters) to use the internet.
