Guys is this possible:

I need to extend the range of a wireless network is a building to 1 story upstairs (they don't want to see cables).

I have an existing DI 624 wireless router> when i checked the settings there was no provision for making the router a client. Do i then need to get a power full access point of same make, connect it via mac address to this router or i should just change the whole equipment and make it linksys cos i know with linksys wireless routers one could make a wireless router an AP.

Hi,

As, i understand, you need to extend the wireless range.
Best option is,
1. Buy a universal Range extender (universal - compatible with all vendors)
2. connect the standalone computer to URE
3. Configure the URE according to the Router.
Note: mac addressessing is not required for this configuration.
OR
You can configure any router as an access point (with out running cables between two devices) only when you have advance feature "wireless bridging"
For this you will configure using mac address.

Hey guys, happy weekend in advance. bringing the post back to life. i want to really know, can i write the firmware of a DLink AP on a DLink Wireless router thus converting it to an AP, and it will now function as an AP not longer a wireless router. it will have the features of an AP and settings in it's web configuration page......? how possible is this nutty idea.

Some might say just go purchase an AP but i don't want to. sometimes one has to digg in better and brighter, go beyond possibilities..

What I understand from your first post is that you want to extend the wireless range of your existing DI 624 router/AP to the upper floor without any wires. You have several options to do this:

1. You can buy a range expander (wireless repeater) as lav_plsb1 said. And place it some were between the floors.

2. You could buy a more powerful antenna to replace your router's antenna (If it is replaceable).

3. If you don't want to buy any equipment then try this, tilt the antenna of your router such that it forms an angle of say 75 to 70 degrees with the ground (instead of 90 degrees). The reason is that those antennas typically have a donut shaped coverage/range. When you tilt it, your allowing some coverage to go upstairs.

The 3rd option is not guaranteed to work, you could try your luck though. Your best bet would probably be option 1 ofcourse.

well thanks man S0lo i will try the tilting @ angles 70^. i will also try my idea by writing the firmware of an AP to the wireless router.
