Hi all.
I have a 2514 router that I would like to use to study with, but I can not update the ios because it is read only. Here is a show version of the router.

ROM: System Bootstrap, Version 11.0(10c)XB2, PLATFORM SPECIFIC RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)
ROM: 3000 Bootstrap Software (IGS-BOOT-R), Version 11.0(10c)XB2, PLATFORM SPECIFIC RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)
router uptime is 2 minutes
System restarted by power-on
System image file is "flash:igs-d-l.110-22", booted via flash
cisco 2500 (68030) processor (revision C) with 2048K/2048K bytes of memory.
Processor board ID 01406664, with hardware revision 00000000
Bridging software.
X.25 software, Version 2.0, NET2, BFE and GOSIP compliant.
2 Ethernet/IEEE 802.3 interfaces.
2 Serial network interfaces.
32K bytes of non-volatile configuration memory.
8192K bytes of processor board System flash (Read ONLY)
Configuration register is 0x2102.
Questions
Can I change a jumper to make the system flash R/W?
Can I change the Configuration register to make the system flash R/W?
Can I update the cisco ios or am I up a creek wth out a paddle?

to answer your questions,
1) no, there is no jumper that you can change to make the flash read/write
2) yes, you need to change the config-reg
3) the IOS can be updated, although on a router with only 4MB of RAM and 8MB of flash, you're going to be severly limited in what version of IOS you will be able to load and run with that limited amount of memory.
check out cisco's info on working with 2500 router flash:
