cisco 1700 series problem was created by asab
hello there,
we have a cisco 1700 series router with two serial interfaces and one fastethernet interface.
we connected the only fastethernet to another router - which is also a cisco 1700 series. we need another fastethernet to connect to the switch.
is there anyway we could convert the two serial ports on the cisco 1700 series router to act as a fastethernet.
please help

The 1700 series router you have is 1721 or 1751, 1751 will have 2
wan slots and 1721 only have 1 wan slot.
What you need to do is to get a wan interface card WIC-1ENET to
change it with your serial interface card, I do not know whether
the 1700 series router support another Fastethernet card.
There are many WIC-1ENET cards selling very cheap now on the
Internet.
Cheers!

1720 to 1751 not all
the 1760 with standard image does by default.
if you cant get another wan ethernet card, try setting up vlans, and at the physical interface create logical subinterfaces.
you need also a vlan capable switch.

does the other 1700 have serial interfaces as well?
if so, you could connect the serials, freeing up the fast ethernet port.
or you could policy based routing on the ethernet port if you can't do sub-interfaces.
Just out of curiosity, can you give us more info on what you are doing? why do you have 2 routers connected directly together?

at the training centre, we've been given a scenario and told to deal with it.
thanks for responding.
I'm gonna try your idea d_jabsd.
