internet connection

hi to all,

from time to time i am having a problem with my internet connection. i cant browse the internet. tried to ping a domain to check the dns and it failed. so i tried to tracert a public IP xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx and the result was a request time-out after my routers ip (my modem-router's IP is 192.168.1.1) which means the problem is not with my internal network but with the external already. but after resetting the modem the internet connection comes back. it happens now too often. what do you think causes this problem? any idea? tnx

I've had the same problem with my OpenBSD router. I found that some ISPs make bad use of LCP, used to establish, configure and confirm the status of a link, and as a result, when the remote side disconnects you -i.e. to assign you an other IP address-, router doesn't know that and keeps his side of the link up! Some clients like rp-pppoe can work-around this problem.

I'm not sure about your hardware modem-router though -I've never seen this problem in such device for some reason

Try checking if there is a "keep alive" option somewhere and, if not, contact your ISP and let him know of the problem -if that's indeed the cause you won't be alone!

I had similar problems with my linksys adsl wireless router(WAG54GS). I was on my ISP broadband support every day.

I did set the keep alive yet still the problem went on. Most ISP these days don't really care about the customer. I'm saying this becuase I was asked to reboot the router, pc and turn them on again, and this happened million times.

Anyway, I tried ipcop on a small pentium 3 pc, with 3 NIC, 4gb hdd and 256MB of RAM (£30 from computer fair) and hey, it's awesome! it's been kicking since February this year. I have dyndns service on and no problems so far.

I don't know if the adsl modem routers are part of it but looking at it the ipcop is not much different from it. Perhaps Monsky you want to give it a try. Its also a platform to test your firewall skills and play with servers if you want, even if you're using dynamic ip.

thank you for sharing me your own grief with the ISPs. the problem is still there and i called already their technical support but i cant afford to wait for them just to show them the error, so i reset and reset the modem everytime the problem shows up.

have you tried using a different modem/router yet?

i havent replaced the modem router yet. it was the ISP who provided us this. i called them already and they said that they are going to reset the server (but i don't know this "server" means) but if the problem still persists, they said they are going to send their technical.

does anybody could explain what probably causes a modem to behave like that, i mean the connection loss, to function again properly you have to reset it, after several hours the problem occured again? is it really an ISP related?
