Y change the subnet mask?

Our consultant has suggested that the subnet mask on all machines needs to change from 255.255.255.0 to 255.255.248.0.
Does that mean we are running out of IP adresses?
Thanks

Not necessarily. Your present arrangement offers a single, large pool of addresses. I'm assuming that you only have a few PCs since your consultant is suggesting that you use a smaller range for their addresses. The idea might be to slice your current IP address range into a series of smaller ranges. There are several reasons why you might want to do this; to implement separation using VLANs, to introduce routing between buildings or departments, to pave the way for moving a whole section to another location etc. The only question in my mind though is why such a small range for the PCs? Perhaps, if you have many PCs, your consultant is suggesting splitting them up into groups too, in which case their IP addresses will also need to change

Hey, Bishop i think you didn't read the post carefully as libran_alok stated that the consultant suggested changing from 255.255.255.0 to 255.255.248.0 thus giving more addresses. I believe that implementing vlans and not increasing the number of pcs per subnet would be a better idea as you would have the opportunity to share resources per department etc. (like theBishop said).

Thanks alot ;o)
That might be the case... because we are looking to seperate our departments and adding more PCs... subnetting is what we are looking for, for a better utilization of the network resources and minimizing the network traffic...
I hope i said the right things... ;o)

yes i had the same confusion when i read bishop's thread. affectively you would be increasing the number of nodes per subnet by changing the mask. and i also agree in implementing VLAN architecture to minimize complexity and improve on performance.
