Is there an error message before it freezes? Having said that, this is likely a hardware issue if it can't even behave in ROMMON mode, you're basically done with that router. It'd be easiest to buy a new 2501 router.

Hey now, all is not yet lost! I Googled this, though I can't say I've ever heard of it before:

www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/routers/...186a00800949b5.shtml

From the article:

The appearance of the "abort" or "trace trap" messages indicate that the configuration register is probably set to a value that enables the break key in normal operation. The bit number 08 (in hexadecimal: 0x0100), if set, disables the break key (that is, the factory default value). If it is reset to 0 (either explicitly as in 0x2002, or implicitly, as in 0x2, which is equivalent to 0x0002), the break key is enabled. When the break key is enabled, a break sequence causes the router to go into ROMmon mode, even after it has booted up and is in normal operation. Even if no break signal was intentionally sent through the console, some terminals that misbehave or reload may accidentally send the router a signal similar to the break sequence.

Seems like tweaking the config register as it describes might help. No guarantees, but it couldn't hurt to try.

Interesting link, but that doesn't seem to match the problem description. If the router is freezing in both IOS and rommon, then it's not going to be config-register related. The 0x0002 config-register would just reboot the router into rommon under certain circumstances.

Well, perhaps it's your terminal emulator program or serial port (or USB to serial adapter if you are using a laptop)? If you have another Cisco router, try to console into to see if you get the same results. Good thing is that the 2501 routers are very affordable, looking on ebay, I have seen some for as little as $40, depending on memory of course. Good luck.
