I had sort of the same problem with web serving, mail and remoting into my home network. What I discovered was last time I updated the firmware in one of my routers, it set the default timeout to 2 minutes. So after 2 minutes of inactivity on my network, it would stop all incoming traffic. After many frustrating hours of trouble shooting, I discovered this and set this value to 0, I was good to go. The power saving settings can also create the same sort of problem. Good luck!!

I talked to a friend who owns a middle size computer hardware and software company.
He said he had to set up a webpage for his company and had the same problems.
His solution, which he guaranteed to me, is to buy a new Ethernet card, he recommended 3com and, he added, change the Switch that you have, buy a 1/1000 switch and everything will be fine.
In this same forum, somewhere I read something by JACK, he said he had similar problems and he changed the HUB.
There is no doubt that I have to change the Switch, which I will have to order from outside my country, it will take one or two weeks to get it.
Until then, my friends.
P.S. I will keep this forum informed, for the benefit of all good and hard working people of this excellent website(Forum)!!!!!!.
P.S. Almost Forgot. Visit www.tinywebgallery.com and download this php written, GNU license program for Images. I set it up with 186 photographs and loads fast.

As of today 29 of April 2006.
1.- Installed a new Ethernet Card (1Gb); Manufacturer (3Com).
2.- Installed a new Web Manageable Switch (1/10/100/1000); manufacturer (3Com).
3.- Re-Installed the ADSL Modem-Router.
In the process, I noticed that the ADSL Modem-Router had a status of conecting, instead of connected.
I personally think that there was a faulty ADSL Modem-Router installation. Conected when working; Disconnected when idle or connecting.
It is working fine know!!!!! :D :D :D :D

I honestly recommend you to do it!
You have no idea how many things you will learn!
You need to know general things of Servers, clients, modems, routers, switches, html, php, ports, electricity, Spam, Hardware, Software, etc., and be able to see, that, at some point, it would be useless to go further, in order to reach your objective.
if you visit my website, I just installed a webmail for a group of friends and family and planning to set up a Radio with the help of Shoutcast server and Winamp.
If I can be of any help to you, feel free to e-mail me!!.
Regards, Goog Luck and be persistant!!!!!!!.
P.S. It feels good to be in total control of your website, mail server, ftp server, webmail, html pages, php pages, logs, etc....
