Trouble Shooting with Windows NT was created by Grey
Hey guys. First off... I have a question I am hoping someone can answer. I've actually been coming to this site for a couple months now and I've enjoyed reading what everyone has to say, but today I finally have a question so I joined your ranks and registered.
i have a competition coming up at work and I have been working mainly with XP and server 2k3. But this competition is for a job on the NT server platform of which I have a bit but not alot of experience.
My question is what are the basic things I can use for trouble shooting?
With Server2k3 and XP I often use the event viewer, tools like replmon and dcdiag.
So I suppose this is the same sorta thing taht I'm looking for in NT.
I hope you can help.
Thanks,
Graham

A lot of the stuff in Windows 2k+ has been borrowed from the NT world.. there are some vestiges of NT all around..
have a look at these links
www.windowsitlibrary.com/Topics/Topic.cf...ministration%20Tools
Lot of NT stuff in the middle of the page
www.microsoft.com/resources/documentatio...us/net/sur_tbls.mspx
Also for some new tools check out sysinternals.com.. some very useful freeware that you should never leave home without

Is there any type of logging with NT? something similar to an event viewer?

You have an event viewer in NT and W2K. It is in the Administrative Tools folder (in Start/Programs in NT and in the Control Panel in W2k).
You have Application, Security and System logs to look at. In W2K Server you also could have DNS.
