I hope you are accessing the shared folder from User login and the administrator has assigned the read only rights to the respective users.

This rights is not permenantly assigned to that folder, it will differ from user to user based on the security policy applied by the administrator.

The attrib command will not display the access rights what every applied through the security policy.

Hope it will clear your doubt.

Hi,

If you are talking about the Read Only attribute when you click on the properties of a folder/file then in Windows XP and Windows 2003 for some reason its always ticked (but sort of grayed out). Its just by design and doesn't necessarily mean that it is Read Only, just a little qwerk of the OS.

Cheers

yes i noticed it and have read info about that readonly attributes. but my main problem here is that you can open the files but you wont be able to edit it (ex. excel files). every file has a ReadOnly attrib. when you attrib all those file from the dos shell it says it is in A attribute not R or S. i think this is something about the permissions and security but i cant figure out how this thing happen.

i copied all necessary files from the NT server to our new windows server 2003 through windows exlorer. all i thought is this would be enough. i reviewed the acces rights of each users and groups and every thing seems Ok. full access for the folder owners and limited access for those whose job is only to view the files. but even the users who has full access cant even edit their files. :( im sure i am missing something.

If the readonly attribute is ticked but grayed out then chances are that its not actually readonly (only if the tick is bold will the attribute be set). As you have checked, if the attrib is showing that its not set then it will definately not be set.

Are you accessing the folders through a share ? Windows 2003 will make the share rights to Everyone - ReadOnly, have you changed this ?

after i reviewed the users rights to the folders, the inherited rights i found my error. what i did to correct this even though i am not sure of what i am doing. i gave Everyone in the D: drive full access for the child folders to inherit and then to each indivudual users' folders i unchecked the inherit rights from the parent folder then i gave appropriate users' rights to each folder.

thnx a lot to all
