if you are going to backup drivers via dos, it's a long winded process as the drivers are installed under various directories. best practice is, if these are drivers for devices like printers, modems, video cards. sound cards, etc, you should be having CD roms against each of such devices which can be used to restore later.
if you really need to backup files/drivers, try using any dos based zip facility like PKZIP and PKUNZIP.
and about the blue screen, it's famously called the microsoft blue screen of death. there's nothing much you can do about it. try pressing CTRL ALT DEL to come out of it, or just restart your pc.

I tend to try and find all my drivers on the Internet and store them on a safe drive (or partition). Then if anything goes wrong with my machine and i need a rebuild i have them all in one safe place (incase i loose the drivers).
Its a lot easier to find the drivers online (in zip format) as soon as you have bought the device as you know the exact make/model you are looking for, otherwise you need to take the lid off and sometimes the exact models are not printed on the hardware.
Cheers

Also, i find that its best to try the .com sites if you are unable to find drivers on any other site. This is mainly because the US tends to host all drivers on their webservers.
I also find this website very useful www.driverguide.com stores loads of drivers.
