Mandrake 9.2 crashes LG CD-ROM drives

If you have an LG CD-ROM drive, and you were planning to install Mandrake 9.2, don't. Apparently theres a problem which results in the install failing and then when you reboot, the drive is dead.

More details on the mandrake website.

Note : LG drives are the only ones affected and only by Mandrake 9.2. I have personally installed 9.1 on a machine with an LG drive.

Hehe let me explain the even more hilarious follow-up which should prove without a shadow of a doubt that Microsofts monopoly is <sarcasm> the best thing that happened to the IT industry </sarcasm> !

LG responds by saying 'We don't support Linux, we don't test our optical drives on Linux, they are made for Windows'. Ok I'm a bit of an old schooler when it comes to these things -- but tell me --

Aren't we supposed to make software to support hardware, and not the other frigging way around ?!

What on earth do they mean by our hardware only runs on windows ! Its like saying I'm sorry you cant use this steering wheel with this engine !

Its the same thing with the winmodem issue.. I'm personally crippled with my modem being 'made for windows'. Why don't they do what they're supposed to -- make hardware that sticks to standards so that everyone can support it. And how can a top manufacturer of hardware test their products on only one OS ?

Say you had an enterprise that picked up 100 machines with LG drives and then tried to install <insert unsupported OS name here> and then crashed the drive ?

Grr.. and I'm not even (too much) of a Windows basher !
Just out of principle I'm going to call up an LG customer rep here and just harrow them for a bit.

Yeah admitted, there are so many standards that you never knwo what anyoens sticking to.. but you'd think something as ubiquitous as a CD-ROM drive would be tested with more than one OS !

Nobody's asking them to provide support, or even drivers ! Just see that the thing doesn't die on another OS. Next thing you know they'll be preloading hard-disks with Windows... in fact if my memory serves me right, I think there was someone who was offering hard-disks with Lindows preinstalled.. The best part about Lindows is it takes the worst of windows and the worst of linux and puts it all together.

Cmon Tom... sooner or later you'll have to admit that having just one OS dominating the desktop market is a bad thing ! The best thing that could have come out of the anti-trust case would be if they'd made them release the windows source (lol NOW I'm in a dreamworld).

Oh now thats a nice one ..... an LG cdrom that wont work with Linux ?

Certainly the first time I've heard that.

Why don't you simply install Redhat 9 ? Its far better than mandrake anyways!
