tracing an IP

Sorry chaps, but I need to be reminded of how to check an IP address of a mail I recieve in my inbox from explorer and in outlook

Check the email headers. In Outlook (2007 this is for), you need to open your email, in the options section, click the little arrow in the bottom right of the options box and you will see the Message Options. From there, you will see the Internet Headers and it should tell you the path the email took to get to your mail server.

how about if you are using yahoo or gmail straight

Most of the webmail providers will let you view headers... either through an option called 'full headers' or 'raw text' or similar.

A quick tip is to look for the last Received from: line... that is where the mail originated from. It will also tell you how it was sent.. for example,

Received from 1.2.3.4 via HTTP or via SMTP.

If you see something like
Received from 1.2.3.4 (5.6.7. it probably means the IP brackets is the one you want (the other being a gateway or proxy).

Interestingly... many webmail providers send lousy headers... making it almost impossible to see where the mail came from. Yahoo is one of them if I remember correctly.
